Darren I think you hit on an interesting point, one that I have struggled with ever since I started building models with current techniques.

I remember reading "The Verlinden Way" books a few years ago and took to heart many of Frank's ideas, one of which was, "simulate, don't duplicate" and for most situations I think he was correct. I see so many guys getting hung up on the details like, are ALL of the cockpit details exactly like the real thing and the whole issue of raised vs. engraved panel lines etc.

The truth is on real aircraft panels do not fit together like those on a Mercedes. Modern aircraft have panels that butt up flush with each other and sit further apart in other locations or overlap each other. Basically the whole airframe is a big jigsaw puzzle and duplicating that in scale, while a noble effort, delivers very little "return on investment" for the time and effort expended IMO.

I personally think that if technology existed that could allow us to shrink real airplanes to scale sizes that most of us would look at the final result turn our noses up at it. Modelling is IMO 3 dimensional art and no matter how hard the "artist" tries to duplicate real life the final product of all of that effort is always an interpretation of the real thing.

Kai, I love your interpretation, Outstanding work there!

Truly outstanding build and photography to match! It really shows just how well Tamiya captured the Tomcat's shape when built with a superior level of detail and finish.

BZ!

call it the spanish, verlinden, chinese or even alien way but that´s the finish i love to see on a model, and you have created the most beautifull tomcat model i have ever seen in my all life ,simply stunning .

just a question, how long did it took you to build it?

p.s in my modelers circle of friends here in portugal we call the technique you used on those lines the dog´s bath

i am looking forward to your hornet build

WOW! Awesome build! I like the finish and your attention-to-detail.
I also shot an image of that jet. Here it was at Fallon.

It's been here since December 2009 and I hadn't seen it yet.
Thanks for bringing it back to the top, Pompeo.

Hey..many thanks guys!!!

Since a long time this cat is finished and displayed on the Diorama.

But I did not had the time to put some images online......

Sooooo....ok..

Pompeo reminds me on that Cat and here are a few quick images of the Diorama incl. my little Cat, my MD-3, the VF-31 Crew and my little Mini-Me taking a picture of that Cat onboard the CVN-71

Hope you like it....

Regards Kai

Some In-Progress images.....

Images (also In-Progress) of the MD-3, the Tow Tractor, the Duty Box Cart, the Waepons Trolley and the Tow Bar can be found on my homepage under "Scale Modeling" http://www.combatedgeproductions.com

Here are images of the VF-31 Crew. The Crew is a mix of the Verlinden Pilot and some spare parts from Reheat and Academy.

Kai

And finally ...my Mini-Me

I tried to create a scene that really happend onboard the CVN-71 back in 2005.

I did detail images of the VF-31 CAG bird and so I had to be on the display too...

I used some PWMP figures, scratchbuild my EOS-1D with the 24-105, the 100-400 and the 600mm lense, my belt and and my flight deck helmet.

Tatataaa.......welcome aboard Mini-Me

Many Thanks for your kind words Thomthegrom!

I am happy that you like my Crew. Because Pilots and Figures are always my biggest challenge.

I am building planes and sometimes ships or tanks.......but I am faaaaaarrrrr away to be a good figure painter. I saw figures from other guys.....wow...these guys are crazy .

But I can live with my figures and right now, I am working on my Hornet pilot

Regards Kai
