How do you know what kits are re-released and what kits are new molds? I have found that the kits in the box with the yellow stripes are much better than the others or is that a wrong assumption?

Do you mean the limited edition kits? They are usually a variant (sometimes a few new parts, most times just new decals) of a mold that is available in their regular line.
For example, their limited edition 1/48 Sea King AEW.2A is a modification of their US SH-3 Sea King kit with some new parts to make a Westland built Sea King. Not really any "better", just a different version. They have few kits that are new molds of kits they have had previously. I can only think of a few like the 1/32 Fw190s, 1/48 F-4J Phantom, and the 1/48 Shinden (George) that existed previously in an old tool form that was later replaced by a new tool. The rest are basically reboxes or modified reboxes. Last edited by Dwill; February 8th, 2010 at 08:30 PM. |

I always thought that when has does a new mold, it generates a ton of discussion
Modeling madness has a pretty good run down of their "stable" in the kit research section http://modelingmadness.com/splfeat/kr/researchfeat.htm
