1/32 Tamiya F-14D AJ-100 VF-31 Last Tomcat Cruise
Hi guys,

here is my latest project, the 1/32 Tamiya F-14A (Black Knight kit) converted into F-14D BuNo. 164342 from VF-31.

I started that project back in 2005 and finished the Cat a few month ago.
(But i had several stops on that project due to my little daughters birth, a lot of work and the move to a new house.)

I rescribed the complete Tomcat fuselage and threw nearly every after market item I could get.

I scratchbuild several items, like the:

- Air intakes
- Air intake ramp interior and actuator
- Air brake interior structur
- both upper ECS heat exchanger exhausts near the spine
- both lower ECS fans between the intakes
- windscreen interior
- TCS Tactical Camera System lense for the double chin pod
- Access panel and interior for the engine ground start connection
- Access panel and interior for the outboard spoiler service module

Used aftermarket items (not every item from each set was used):

- Teknics cockpit set F-14D
- Black Box F-14D cockpit set
- Wolfpack Design F-14 airframe conversion (used only the D-model fairings on each side of the engine!)
- Wolfpack Design F-14 airbrake (used only the airbrake panel and the actuators)
- Wolfpack Design F-14 late type wheels
- Wolfpack Design F-14 boarding ladder (used only interior storage compartment)
- Wolfpack Design F-14 fuel tanks and pylons
- 2 x Tamiya F110 Engines Nozzles from the Tamiya F-16CJ kit
- Cross Delta stiffener plates
- Eduard F-14 Exterior
- Eduard F-14 Interior
- Eduard F-14 Placards
- Flightpath GBU-12 with some parts from the Academy GBU-12 (F-16 kit)
- Phoenix Pitot tube and AOA sensor

- Phoenix Decals F-14D AJ100
- Cross Delta F-14D AJ100
- Superscale F-14 Data&Stencils

I decided to build VF-31 AJ100 with early Last Tomcat Cruise markings.

Because in July 2005 i spent two days onboard the CVN-71 USS Theodore Roosevelt with the last two remaining Tomcat Squadrons from VF-31 and VF-213. The last VF-31 CAG bird was one of my favorite Tomcats.

Tomcat 164342 transferred from VF-101 a few month earlier and received the VF-31 CAG markings.

Anyway, enough comes the images. I hope you like it.....

Greetings Kai

A few images of the real AJ-100, taken during my visit to NAS Oceana (May 2005) and my visit to the CVN-71 USS Theodore Roosevelt (July 2005).

I miss that bird so much............

That might just be the best large scale CAT i have ever seen

What an amazing looking model! You did a great job on that build, and I am very impressed. I love the pic of the real bird hanging off the edge of the ship with the wake behind it. You can also see how well that bird was taken care of. I imagine that it was re-painted when it came from -101, and that it is a CAG bird, but you can't see a single panel line on that thing!

That IS the best large scale Tomcat I've ever seen. Your time, effort and obvious love for the F-14 is obvious! Thanks for all the detail shots . . . I thorouhly enjoyed each one! Outstanding work!!! :thumbs-up:

It would be quite obvious at this moment that outstanding aviation photography is not your sole talent! That is the nicest 32nd scale Turkey I've ever seen. Incredible job sir!

@Aussie_Stinger, strikeeagle801, warthoglvr and jefropas

MANY, MANY THANKS!! I am happy that you like my Cat!

I mean thats the "Flightline", but if you guys want........and if this ok for the Mods?! I can post a few "In Progress" images into that thread.

Just two "In Progress" images.

@Mods: Please let me know, if you don`t want "In Progress" images in that thread!

These image are from early 2005. When i started that build, i decided to build an F-14B. So don`t worry about the F-14B configuration in that images :thumbs-up:
In late 2005 i converted my "F-14B" into a D Model and changed the Cockpit layout. The Cockpit is from Teknics and that set is really nice.

Greetings Kai

Absolutetly superb Kai!......what a beautiful piece of modelling there.

Beautiful pics of the real thing taken by yourself, an outstanding example of modelling and excellent pics taken of the finished model, the package doesn't come more complete than that.

Unreal!:surprise2big: I'm not sure that I've seen a finer Turkey built in ANY scale. Just incredible!

JakeMelampy November 29th, 2009 05:49 PM

Great job, Kai. That thing is gorgeous. I have decals for the same jet that maybe I'll get around to doing some day. Unless VF-213 last-cruise decals materialize.

As you know Kai, I've built this bird, and did pretty good with it too. Your build, however, blows mine away, thank you very much. You rule!

Kai - that is one absolutely stellar build!!!! It's great to see it completed, although I have to admit, I was hoping to see the 101 red tail and some of our decals at work. And I just realized I never did get you the corrected white canopy names - I'm sorry. You have certainly created a masterpiece!! Most excellent.

If you want some critiquing of the accuracy details, read on. Otherwise ignore the rest of my post.

You have built a stunning beautiful Tomcat! And that cockpit detail is mindblowing!

-During workups and throughout cruise, 100 had black outlines around the data boxes.
-CMC name on left RIO side should be CMC, not CMG (Command Master Chief)
-00 on front gear doors was just in black. No yellow shadowing
-DANGER between JET and INTAKE was in red.
- VF-31 on the strake had yellow shadowing
- Red turbine stripe should cut through the middle of the formation light and NAVY should be moved forward with it.
- BUNO/F-14/Beware of Blast was in a different font. They didn't do the Long Beach Navy BUNO until it was repainted after cruise.
-100 flap numbers were in 36018 Euro Gray until repainted after return from cruise
-Bomb fuse on Felix were in red. 101 had them in white.

Congrats on an amazing build,
